But I Digress

I sometimes test people by asking if they've ever heard of Euphues.

Wonder what John Lyly would make of I.M. & texting?

In the mean time, it will be interesting to see what can be done with blogger --- see if any of this translates into more effective use of time, or increased use of the library.

Oct. 21st, 2008 -- This post is evolving into my checklist to track comments and progress on each of the the 23 things in Nebraska Learns 2.0:

Thing 1; Thing 2; Thing 3; Thing 4; Thing 5;
Thing 6; Thing 7; Thing 8; Thing 9; Thing 10;
Thing 11; Thing 12; Thing 13; Thing 14; Thing 15;
Thing 16; Thing 17; Thing 18; Thing 19; Thing 20;
Thing 21; Thing 22; Thing 23;

So (the date format in the rest of this is in YYYYMMDD format):

Thing 1 (Discovery) :
20081123:
Referring to the above sample, KILGORE MEMORIAL LIBRARY is a clear link on a web page. Is it likely one would construct a web page where the link to the library's web site looked like this: clown nose
(push
nose)?

20081230: The default format for referencing FLICKR images makes the resultant image in a web page a clickable link back to that image's original location within FLICKR.

W3schools has a bunch of free tutorials on web-technology topics, including basic html.

20081020 -- Added a comment referencing this blog post.

Thing 2 (Goals for Lifelong Learning) : 20081025 -- added a comment.
20081120 P.P.S. -- added a second rumination in light of what's been learned to date.
20090104 P.P.P.S --- look at the rumination on what has materialized.

Thing 3 (grab a blog): 20081020 -- Added a comment referencing this post.

Thing 4 (register blog): 20081016 -- Referenced this blog in a comment.

Thing 5: 20081021 -- My peripatetic work style argues against I.M. ing -- so this one will get skipped over for now.

20081105 -- IM'd with Allana about getting images incorporated into blog posts. The advantage over telephone is that the segments of "conversation" are discrete, and you do not have to worry about that extra piece of equipment (i.e. telephone handset). On the other hand, someone trying to IM with me at work would have to set it up ahead of time to be sure I was at a workstation with everything in place and operational.

20090104 -- On the personal side of things, kids & grandkids got us going on facebook, including comments, etc. But no IM.

Thing 6: 20081105 -- Looked at what the state newspapers were offering in their RSS feeds, and "Unshelved." Thus far have not found anything with the right focus that I'd subscribe that way. One of our staff members is an Unshelved follower. To keep with the spirit of this exercise & build "KILGORE 4 U" into a valuable public service, I'm thinking about looking for RSS links to book review blogs emanating from the large independent bookstores like Powells, Politics and Prose, and the Tattered Cover.

Thing 7: 20081020 -- talked about R.S.S. in staff report to the Library Board and how it could fit in with our "dynamic" front page for the library's web site. That is, providing the ability for people to subscribe to portions of our web site as we update it. Still have a lot of technical skills to learn before that becomes real.

20081118: The Board would like to see "new book lists" on the web site -- have find a time-efficient way to snag info. from our "new bibs added" to generate self-regenerating lists that could be the sources for RSS feeds. There was a program about this at the last CODI.

20081106: Did a variant of the RSS feed exercise using GOOGLE READER. There was a significant time lag between doing the setup and getting any results. Nobody had warned us about that, so my experience may have been an aberration.

20081119: Cannot keep up with the stuff coming in to Google Reader. It is like trying to drink from a fire hose. Will have to keep cutting out feeds until the incoming stream is manageable. On the other hand, found a tracker feature in yorklib.org that records every new node as it comes in. It does not note subsequent revisions however.

Thing 8 (flickr: 20081021 -- Kilgore Memorial Library has a "pro" account on Flickr. Stan also maintains the MVWC account. The comment elicited a quick response. Thanks Susan.

20081123 : For my "hobby" interest after reviewing flickr groups, set up a new one -- antique_wrenches. Also joined "librarians' desks.

20090110: For another hobby interest, started another FLICKR account devoted to images of the human figure as shown in U.S. Patent drawings.

Thing 9: 20081107 -- Tried the picmarkr watermarker for FLICKR images and commented on the result. This might be easier & a lot more "portable" than the comparable feature in PHOTOSHOP.

Thing 10 20081108 -- Posted a THING 10 Comment linking to Serious Squirrel in FLICKR(r). The tools in Things 9 & 10 could be useful for "how to do it" slides in instructional presentations, and to add text to images. "Serious Squirrel" was generated using Captioner from Big Huge Labs.

Thing 11 calls for a blog entry about technology.
20081110 -- Point one in such a blog might be a reprise of the technology plan called for to qualify for e-rate. Point one-A in that blog might be a rant about the bureaucratic red tape involved in trying to get a few hundred dollars discount for public internet access. Poor dunderheads who can only "learn by doing" look at all this and despair.
20081115 -- P.S. Read my Appropriate Technology post for another take.
20081116 -- P.P.S. Another Thing 11 comment -- somewhat speculative.

THING 12 (Library Thing) 20081110 -- As noted in my initial Thing 12 post, I was amazed at the depth and obscurity of Library Thing's content.
20081115: P.S. -- After consideration, decided a local author / local history books collection would be a good use for Library Thing.
20081120: P.P.S. -- A comment in the Library Camp Nebraska wiki put me on an information chase that ended at TechCrunch's post about social networks for book lovers.

20090110 : P.P.P.S. -- Made the "The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food" reference in Reading Habits link to Library Thing.

20090129 : Px4.S --- The writers of How To Organize Books note Library Thing along with other options.

Thing 13 explores TWITTER.
20081110 -- My comments noted the results of two searches at search.twitter.com. One turned up a confession of illegal activity. Is such a posting evidence in a court of law?

Thing 14 (tagging / delicious ) 20081119 -- Tried searching delicious for "DriveShield" which is technical and fairly obscure. Three of the five links in the search result were to some point in the centuriontech.com web site; one was to a product review, and one to an IT product reseller's web site.
perkins library is non-distinctive because several institutions have one. None of the 61 listings returned on Nov. 19, 2008 include the library in Hastings, Nebraska.

20081209 : After more searching what other people have done with tagging & delicious, I've come to the conclusion that my thought processes and interests are idiosyncratic. Either that or an underlying premise of delicious is flawed. Out of dozens of terms I tried in delicious, the only one that taggers and I agree on is cutter tables! cutter tables

I can conceive of a project to set up delicious for the library & start tagging web sites related to local interests as an alternative to rebuilding the now woefully outdated local links. This would be a parallel effort to the 68467 FLICKR group.

20081216: -- yorklib2 is the identity for our new delicious account, and 68467 is one of the distinctive meaningful tags we'll be using to identify web sites with York related content.

Thing 15 (slideshare) 20081217 -- The 4th slide of the slideshare tour was the bulb lighter. This would be a great way for libraries to collaborate on "how to do it tutorials" for complicated equipment like our new ST200X imaging system.
Get a group tweaked "slide show" with synched MP3 narration, post it on slideshare, and link to the mashup from our web sites.
slideshare

20081227 -- Some folks have talked about doing the same thing with "video clips" -- the consultant who set up the basic structure of the library's web site did a couple of "how-to" pieces in .mov format. They came to us as attachments to e-mails.

Thing 16 (Library 2.0 etc)
20081123: An early post about Library 2.0 --

20081222: A month later, reflecting on what had changed in the interval -- the FLICKR 68467 group and delicious 68467 tag effort.

Thing 17 (intro to wiki) in library context) 20081230: It is challenging to see what various institutions are doing with wikis .. our own library is trying to assemble a "procedures manual" using the wiki capability of our DRUPAL based web site. To date, very little has been accomplished.
20081230 (pt. 2): Perhaps the library should undertake organization and sponsorship of a "community wiki" like the Stevens County Wiki in Washington State.

Thing 18 (pbwiki) : 20081020 -- Added favorite animal and favorite websites entries to the Nebraska Learns 2.0 pbwiki sandbox.

20081123 : Made an "anchor link" reference to this portion of this post in "favorite blogs", as well as to "Thing 1" (above) in this post.

20090102-03: Made further revisions & embellishments to "favorite blogs", and jpg'd a screen shot of the result for Shazam.

20090117 : Still weighing pros & cons of using pbwiki compared to wiki module of DRUPAL for staff / in-house wiki.

Thing 19 (apps) --

20090103: Commented on past experience with google/docs, etc. -- deferring to online apps is a major step. Remembering "where stuff is" and all the user I.D.s & passwords needed to get to that place is a challenge. When you have a machine & installed applications, you can fiddle with desktop shortcuts, leave files open for long runs, etc. I have one workstation that has had a file open continuously (with regular updates & changes) for nearly two years. It is in OpenOffice, so recovers if the workstation shuts down unexpectedly or if OpenOffice crashes for some reason.

Thing 20 : 20081119: Posted a brief comment about this Cloud Computing web site.
20081124 : -- Tried biblio.com. Found a J.A. Parks title we already had plus one we didn't. The search & purchase functions are in general similar to abebooks & alibris, but apparently draws from a different segment of the used / O.P. seller universe. You can make a one-time purchase without setting up an account which is a nice feature.

Thing 21; (YouTube --

20081117: an early comment on the phenomenon;

20090106: another comment linking to Calvin Trillin, deadline poet, and Time Suck

20090106 : Finally, this "how to" from YouTube;

Thing 22 (podcasts) --
20090104: A series of links led to MobiStories; brief children's story podcasts.
mobistories We have been looking for something that accomplishes for today's children what "Dial-A-Story" was providing twenty years ago. Our Dial-A-Story's use dropped off to nearly nothing several years ago and we turned it off. It is interesting to see that Dial-A-Story is still being sold.

Noted the investigation in an L2NE Thing 22 Comment.

Thing 23 (end or beginning?) ---

20090103: Ruminated on what had changed at Kilgore Memorial Library due in large part to Nebraska Learns 2.0.
