Time Management

One of our indulgences last week (it was officially vacation time) was to stop at a couple of Antique Malls the last day of the trip.
One dealer's booth in one of the malls had a complete set of painted Roman Numerals for an outdoor clock face. The clock face they'd fit would have to be at least three feet in diameter. Nowadays it seems many in the younger generation cannot read analog clock faces.

Working on L2NE's Thing 6 -- RSS and Thing 7 -- Finding Feeds exercises used significant time. (The curious can check out Thing 7 in my running tabulation of progress through L2NE's 23 Things. ).

One of the comments I remember from news commentary about the results of this week's presidential election is that a studious and analytic personality might want to know lots of details about lots of things, but the realities of presidential responsibility dictate making decisions and moving on at a rapid pace.

The realities of most jobs are similar. As Library Director I have lots of "must do" duties. At the same time it is important to know enough about technology to decide what is worth further investigation for potential use by the library. And the library's staff need to know the technologies that the library's users employ.

So the balancing act goes on. Many technologies are like foreign languages. One must go through extensive learning to become "fluent", and maintaining that "fluency" requires regular use. At least it is not boring. And Tame The Web may actually turn out to be worth regular reading.

Writing this blog entry involved a substantial percentage of my concentration while half of "Wired Science" and an entire "Nova" played out on the television in the corner of the room.
