Aged Infrastructure

Sometime after World War I -- (but not too many years after) -- the First National Bank published a 16-page pamphlet titled York -- A City That Is!. It was the product of the Commercial Club -- a predecessor of the Chamber of Commerce.

York had experienced something of a building boom in the previous decade, and the pamphlet shows several grand homes, Edison, Lincoln and Willard Schools, churches, banks, and other public buildings.

Nine decades later it is interesting to see which structures survive and how they compare. The three elementary schools survive; one has been converted to apartments, one is primarily office space, and one is still used as a school.

Only two of the seven churches remain.

Some of the structures pictured survive in such altered form that they are hardly recognizable.
