Sometime after World War I -- (but not too many years after) -- the First National Bank published a 16-page pamphlet titled
York -- A City That Is!. It was the product of the Commercial Club -- a predecessor of the Chamber of Commerce.
 | | York had experienced something of a building boom in the previous decade, and the pamphlet shows several grand homes, Edison, Lincoln and Willard Schools, churches, banks, and other public buildings. |
Nine decades later it is interesting to see which structures survive and how they compare. The three elementary schools survive; one has been converted to apartments, one is primarily office space, and one is still used as a school. | | |
Only two of the seven churches remain.
Some of the structures pictured survive in such altered form that they are hardly recognizable.
