Curmudgeonry

According to the Wiktionary, there is no recognized etymology for "curmudgeon."
dog_scowling A "cur" is an unloved dog -- but what about "mudgeon?"
It is a pity a subscription to the online Oxford English Dictionary is so expensive -- that would at least provide access to the work of serious scholars.
Information might want to be free, but information providers want to be paid for their work.
They want more than we can afford to pay them.
Likewise, Will Manley's opinion piece on book reviews and materials selection in the March 2009 American Libraries is only accessible to paying customers. That's a pity because Will's wit has sharpened in retirement -- the phrase "pandering to public demand" is fairly representative.

Too many ruminations of that sort might turn one into a curmudgeon.
